Foothill Family Service History

The First 25 Years: 1926 - 1951

  • Foothill Family Service was founded in 1926 when Mrs. Josephine Marsh passed a hat to raise money for a needy family in the Pasadena community.
  • In 1938, Foothill Family Service helped 1,238 children and families by donating clothing, serving meals, ad providing case management.
  • Harriet Huntington Doerr was named Foothill Family Service's first President of the first Board of Directors in 1941.
  • In 1945, Foothill Family Service first began to train USC social work interns.

The Second 25 Years: 1951 - 1976

  • In 1951 Foothill Family Service moved into what is now our Pasadena Family Center on South Oak Knoll Avenue.
  • Between 1963-1966, "Plays for Living," half-hour dramatizations of family and community problems were presented by Foothill Family Service and reached more than 1.5 people nationally
  • In 1975, Foothill Family Service was one of the first agencies to offer specialized programs in child abuse prevention and treatment.

The Third 25 Years: 1976- 2001

  • In 1984 Foothill Family Service was accredited by the Council on Accreditation.
  • In 1985, Foothill Family Service began providing the Adolescent Family Life Program to support pregnant teens and teen parents and their children.
  • In 1991, Foothill Family began providing services in El Monte and Duarte.
  • In 1992, Foothill Family started our ESTEEM School-Based Counseling Program .
  • In 1993, Foothill Family Service started our Domestic Violence Treatment and Prevention Program
  • In 1994, Foothill Family Service started to provide Cal-Learn services, a statewide case management program for teen parents. The Agency opened a family center in West Covina.
  • In 1995, Foothill Family Service started two teen pregnancy preventive and family strengthening programs:   Partners for Responsible Parenting and Future Visions .
  • In 1997, Foothill Family Service started school-based counseling services to Mountain View School District in El Monte.
  • In 1998, Foothill Family Service secured its first contract with the Department of Mental Health to provide mental health services to eligible children and their families.
  • In 1999, Foothill Family Service received the United Way Community Impact Agency of the Year Award.   The Agency also secured a contract to provide CalWORKs Services for Victims of Domestic Violence.
  • In 2000, Foothill Family Service expanded their ESTEEM School-Based counseling services to 40 schools in 5 school districts: Pasadena, El Monte City, Mountain View, Garvey and Temple City.   The Agency was also awarded a grant for a Domestic Violence Prevention Program.

The Recent Past: 2001-2007

  • In 2001, Foothill Family Service celebrated its 75 th Anniversary.   Two Board Members established The Friends of Foothill Family as a support group for the Agency and opened a new Family Center in El Monte
  • In 2002, Foothill Family Service started school-based counseling services in the Haciend-La Puente School District and opened a third Center in Pasadena
  • In 2003, Foothill Family Service expanded school-based counseling services into the Mountain View School District and developed a pilot Co-Occurring Disorder Treatment Program for Teens who were identified as having both mental health and substance abuse problems
  • In 2004, Foothill Family Service expanded mental health services in La Puente, West Covina, Baldwin Park and Covina
  • In 2006, Foothill Family Service celebrated it's 80th Anniversary; secured new contract to provide intensive Wraparound Services to very high need children and their families.   Also received its first Federal appropriation through Congressman Adam Schiff.
  • In 2007, Foothill Family Service secured a new contract to provide Full Service Partnership Services to high need children 0-15 and their families.   Foothill Family Service was awarded the certificate of re-accreditation through December, 2011.

2008

  • Foothill Family Service opens a new site in Duarte, CA.
